Starts with the emotional question: what human experience are we trying to capture? Then works to the narrative, the visual approach, and the production logistics.
Before the genre, before the spectacle, before the commercial considerations — what is the authentic human experience this story is about? Everything else serves this.
When developing any story: What is the one human experience this is fundamentally about? If you cannot answer this in one sentence, the story is not ready.

The more research you do, the more creative freedom you have. Research removes creative constraints — you know the authentic details, so you are free to rearrange them dramatically.
When developing a period or unfamiliar story: Do not guess. Research obsessively until you know more than the audience will ever see.
Dearest (2014) required two years of research into Chinese human trafficking statistics, government policy, and survivor stories.
Hong Kong cinema's unique position is as a cultural bridge between mainland China, Taiwan, and the global Chinese-speaking audience. The best Hong Kong films speak to all of these audiences simultaneously without compromising.
When developing cross-regional content: What story works in Hong Kong, mainland China, AND Taiwan simultaneously? Focus on the universal human experience, not the regional politics.
Comrades, Almost a Love Story tells a Hong Kong story that resonates deeply in mainland China and Taiwan — because at its core it is about migration, loss, and the impossibility of returning to the past.
